Wind Turbine Foundation Removal with Steel Ring Preservation
For this project, Weever Sloop was commissioned to remove a wind turbine foundation as part of a turbine decommissioning and relocation program. The key requirement was the preservation of the embedded steel ring, enabling reuse of the original structural component.
Wind turbine foundations are deep, heavily reinforced concrete structures designed to withstand extreme loads. Conventional demolition would result in the destruction of the steel ring, increasing costs and material loss. Our task was to remove the foundation in a controlled manner while keeping the steel component structurally intact.
The project started with a detailed foundation assessment to determine the optimal demolition sequence. Concrete removal was carried out in carefully planned phases to prevent uncontrolled cracking and avoid deformation of the steel ring.
Once sufficient concrete had been removed, the steel ring was gradually released using specialist techniques. This process ensured the component remained within acceptable tolerances for reuse. After extraction of the steel ring, the remaining foundation was fully removed and the site excavated to the required depth.
